What is a Tarpaulin?
The item in question is a large sheet of some material specifically designed for heavy duty use as a covering. They are usually made from either polypropylene or canvas, but may be produced from other materials as well. Often they have eyelets through which rope or some other type of cord is strung in order to secure it during use.
Covers:
One of the main uses of Tarpaulins is as a cover for some item. Cars, boats, motorcycles, and so on can be protected from the rain, snow, and other extreme weather conditions using a tarp. One important thing to remember here from a buying perspective is size. You need to carefully measure the size of the object you would like to cover with the tarp so as to make sure that the latter will be the right size. Make sure you have enough square footage left over after the size has been accounted for so that you can weight or tie down the edges easily.
You should also give some thought to the material that composes the tarp. Usually polypropylene tarps (often called poly tarps) are fine for covering purposes. They are much less expensive than canvas tarps. Canvas tarps however are heavier and will stay on a large object better than a poly tarp, so if you are thinking in terms of long term storage, you might want to go with a canvas tarp. It is common to put these coverings over furniture and other items as they are moved in a pickup truck or on top of a car. This is another usage of tarps that is handy. Again poly tarps are fine for this purpose though canvas may resist the wind a bit better.
Home Improvement Uses:
There are a number of situations in carpentry, landscaping, and general home improvement when tarps are very useful. For instance they can be used to contain or underlay sand or gravel so that it does not scatter into grass or dirt. They might be used, say, on a golf course when shovelling sand into sand traps, or when putting gravel down in a driveway. Tarps can also be used to cover portions of a roof that is being worked on from inclement weather before the roof is finished and sealed. These items also make great drop cloths when painting. Tarps can be employed successfully in these cases by the causal handy homeowner and by professionals alike.
Again, size is important here, so measure and plan carefully before buying a tarp. Poly tarps are often perfect for these types of applications, though canvas tarps are often the preferred type when a painting drop cloth application is required.
Camping:
Tarps can be used to sit on while having a picnic outdoors, as a cover for a tent for increase rain protection, or as a temporary lean to. It is very common to find tarps – usually poly tarps – in these situations. Consider taking a tarp along on your next camping trip – you will likely find a myriad of uses for it.
